It Wasn't a Vacation...

Kerrigan Sheehan Friday January 19, 2018

OK...so...probably nobody noticed, but I've been gone more than two weeks. It wasn't a vacation. Not for me, at least. No, nobody died...well...nobody with a pulse, anyway...

Here's the short version...

My computer is a custom-built gaming tower. It sucks in a lot of air, and, therefore, dust. About once a year, I bring it in to be professionally cleaned because there are a few crevices that I just can't get to with a can of spray duster. It started acting weird in late October. I did a home repair and it got me through NaNoWriMo in November. But it started acting weird again shortly thereafter. Around Christmas, it became obvious that I had to bring it in. No getting around it.

So I brought it in on January 2nd, as soon as they opened after the holiday. I thought it just needed its annual cleaning and that it'd be done same day or the next day, like usual. I figured I didn't have to tell anyone because I'd be gone two days, at most. It turned out to be over two weeks. I had no intention of abandoning the site. This was NOT a vacation for me. If I'd known it would take that long, I would've said something beforehand. I emailed another moderator behind-the-scenes, so the moderators have known since about then that I'd be gone, and I've been reachable by email this whole time, but I can't actually work the queue on mobile, and I don't have a backup computer if my husband is away from home for work, which is currently the case.

Well...turns out my motherboard died. (As I said, it wasn't anybody with a pulse.) Figuring out which part it was took about a week of process of elimination using parts from a compatible gaming tower they had on the showroom floor. Now, let's go back to "it's a custom-built gaming tower." Replacement parts are not easy to come by. It's not a matter of calling HP or Dell and ordering. It's a matter of tracking down something compatible on Newegg or TigerDirect or Fry's. To further complicate things, there are only a handful of motherboards similar to the one I had, most of which are no longer available. The part had to be ordered, and bad weather further delayed it, causing what should've been a 3-5 day shipment to take over a week. It's all cleaned up, and it's got a shiny new motherboard. It's running just fine. All of my files are right where I left them...kinda. I didn't lose info or anything, but...

The only thing is... My storage drive and my CD drive had their letters (D & E) reversed. So I have to go fix all of my desktop shortcuts. I've also been using Google Docs to edit some of my writing (a project not yet posted...more on that to come), and moving it back from Docs to my word processor eats the paragraph formatting, so I have to fix it manually. The one project alone is 60+ files and 400k+ words that I have to go through manually. Fixing desktop program shortcuts and paragraph spacing in my edited files is going to take me another day or two, and then I'll be all the way back.
